Chapter 29

As soon as I made my demand, a thought struck that made me nearly vomit. If he could never marry me, would he have to wed a Sidhe lady at some point? That notion ripped at my insides. How could I stay if that happened?

My hands fisted by my sides. “Will you have to marry a fae woman someday?” You better not say yes.

“It is expected of me.”

And just like that, I had my answer. He would, even if he had a bond with me. Talk about polygamy. I attempted to pull my hand from his. Maybe I’d been too hasty to think of telling him about the pregnancy.

His grip tightened. “Let me finish. I said it’s expected, not that I will.”

“What about heirs?” I knew that any children I had with him couldn’t possibly inherit his estates or position.

He shrugged. “If I can’t somehow legitimatize the children we’ll have, I won’t have any. It’s that simple.”

“You want children?”

“Naturally. Why wouldn’t I?”

I stared at him, a bit relieved but mostly astonished and aghast. Did I have to explain the reasons why he shouldn’t want children with me? I yanked my hand from his. “They’ll be half-human and will never be accepted in either of our societies.” Even as I said the words, they hit me like a strong blow to the stomach.

If I kept the baby... God, all the repercussions were sinking in as if they were a lead weight. No matter what I chose, there would be unhappiness and pain. I crossed my arms as if that alone could protect me from life’s harsh realities.

“As our societies stand now, yes,” he said slowly as if carefully choosing his words.

“What does that mean?” We lived in a world rife with hate and inequality. Nothing seemed apt to change it anytime soon.

“Merely that. The way our world is ordered can change.”

“That’s not what you said less than a week ago.”

His lips twisted. “Even I am allowed my doubts. I said the world can change, not that it will.”

“But you’re hoping it will?”

“Ever since I first saw you, I’ve wondered.”

I cocked my head to the side. “Not before, though?”

He glanced at the ceiling for a moment. “Before you, I can’t say that I’d ever been purposefully cruel to humans without reason—I realize forcing you to become my companion does qualify as that—but neither did I have any great love of them. Then again, I don’t have a great love for many of my own people.”

I frowned, disappointment burrowing deep. “You only want things to change so they benefit our relationship? Isn’t that very...selfish?”

“I’ve always been selfish,” he said, his tone flat. “I believe I’ve said as much more than once. However, I think I expressed myself poorly just now. Many of my prejudices against humans have faded, in no small part due to interacting with your parents and the other humans here in the village.”

I leaned in, curiosity pushing me to do so. “You say many, so not all?”

“Well, humans do have their vices and did nearly destroy Earth.
